Police Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes therefore contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else.

They include court lists, lists of warrants issued, appointments and changes in the Police Service, lists of arrests and discharges (which include descriptions and photographs), escaped prisoners, deserters from families as well as deserters from service, and missing persons. Notices from Police Gazettes from other states are also often included.

Example entries taken from the 14 October 1915 issue:

Housebreaking and Stealing from Dwelling-Houses
HING, Nellie, confectioner, 252 Russell-street, Melbourne, reports stolen from her dwelling, the 8th and 9th inst., a brown New Zealand rabbit-skin coat, 3/4 length, pink lining, violet stain thereon, torn near top button; a cream lace costume, floral belt, unlined; and a black crepe-de-chene hat, lined with cream, with a large black feather all round and lancer plume at side. Value £23. Two soldiers, who were in the complainant's house at the time of the robbery, were afterwards seen trying to dispose of the coast in Lonsdale-street, Melbourne. One of the offenders is supposed to be George Quigley, and said to be a soldier at the Flemington Show Grounds Camp. O.9355. 11th October, 1915.

McGOWAN, Mary, servant, Victoria-street, Kilmore, reports stolen from her dwelling, on the 7th inst., a gold band ring, originally set with three greenstone, the band ring one of which is now missing; a white petticoat; 3 white slipbodices; a pink blouse; and 2 chemises. Value £3. Frank Napper and his wife, Elizabeth Napper suspected, as they rented a room from complainant, and left suddenly in her absence. Descriptions:-1st. English, baker, 28 years of age, 5ft. 5 or 6 in. high, medium build, brown hair, small brown moustache; dressed in a brown suit and brown soft-felt hat. 2nd. English, 28 years of age, 5ft. 2 or 3 in. high, thin build, delicate appearance, suffers from asthma. They both left Kilmore for Melbourne on the 7th inst.-O.9331. 10th October, 1915.
