Police Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes therefore contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else.

They include court lists, lists of warrants issued, appointments and changes in the Police Service, lists of arrests and discharges (which include descriptions), escaped prisoners, and sometimes missing persons. Notices from Police Gazettes from other states are also often included.

Some example entries taken from the 17 September 1908 issues are:

Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or From Dwellings
Frank Birtles, cyclist, "Valinda", Westgarth-street, North Fitzroy, reports stolen from the Melbourne Bicycle Club, Collins-street, Melbourne, on the 11th inst., a Davies-Franklin bicycle, 21-inch frame, several transfers on it; "Lily and Forget-me-not" on enamel, nickel points, fluted forks, triple crown, Kelly reversible handle bars, sliding back stay, one-eighth inch roller chain, B.S.A. parts, Brooks B 120 spring saddle, Dunlop handmade tires, name plate on top bar with "Presented to Francis Birtles in memory of his perilous ride into and across the Great Victorian Desert" on it. Value £25. - O.5665. 12th September, 1908.

David Foy, North Brighton Bowling Club, Brighton, reports stolen from the club's pavilion, on the night of the 14th inst., 3 boxes of Muria cigars; 2 boxes of Conchas cigars; 3 lbs. of light Havelock tobacco, in 2-oz tins; 2 lbs., Havelock mixture, in 2-oz. tins; 8 lbs. of Two Seas tobacco; 2 1/2 lbs. of dark Two Seas tobacco; 2 bottles of Gilbey's dry gin; and £1 10s. Value £10. Entrance was effected by forcing a door.-O.5738. 16th September, 1908.
