Gazettes are published by governments and their agencies as a means of communication to officials and the general public. As such they are useful, not only to monitor the actions of the government, but also as far as family historians are concerned, they are valuable primary source documents.

The Police Gazettes provided information and instructions to members of the police force. You can expect the Victoria Police Gazettes to include the following information that will usually list names and sometimes private details, descriptions with photograph, addresses and/or occupations:

appointments of Registrars of BDM, Powder Magazine Keepers, Crown Land Bailiffs, Public Vaccinators and Health Officers, and Electoral Inspectors

persons suspected or wanted for a crime and warrants issued

prisoners discharged from gaols
victims of crime

William Moffat is charged, on warrant, with disobeying an order of the Prahran Bench to pay 7s. 6d. per week for the maintenance of his illegitimate child. Description:- A horse trainer and jockey, about 29 years of age, fair complexion, clean shaven, may wear small brown moustache, blue eyes; generally wears a dark-grey tweed suit and a brown alpine hat. - O.6131. 5th July, 1902.
