This book tells the story of the Royal Australian Air Force during the early part of World War II. Almost everywhere there was air fighting Australians were there – in Britain, over Germany, Denmark, Holland, France, over the Atlantic, in Iceland, on the Russian front, the Mediterranean, the Bay of Biscay, Western Desert, Greece, Crete, Syria, Burma, Malaya, Sumatra, and Java; they were training in Canada and Rhodesia.

SAMPLE ENTRY:

The Australians in Iceland include Pilot Officers John R. W. Redman, of Sydney; Terence H. G. Glassford, also of Sydney; Thomas Geoffery Dobbie, of Manly; Donald George Totolos, of North Sydney, and Sergeant Pilots Robert Raynes Royal, of Chatswood, and Herbert E. Beale, of Sydney. Other Australian airmen in Iceland were formed into two crews under the captaincy of United States pilots. They include Pilot Officer Robert Lewis Charles Stewart, of Melbourne; Sergeant Pilots Ambrose A. Tonkin, of Yorktown, South Australia; Robert Downie, of Kilkenny, South Australia; Robert J. Carrodus, of Essendon; Nathaniel Robert Goudie, of Ballarat; and Wallace B. Hutchinson, of Sydney.

The stories themselves provide an interesting insight into the deeds and life in the various areas of fighting – they include Brest Stories, Against Rommel, Desert Stooge, U-Boat Hunters, Syrian Triumph, Eyes for the Army, Desert Dogfighters, Ambon Outpost, Sea Saga, and Ground Staff Blokes.

The book contains many images and sketches, both colour and black and white, of personnel, maps and places. It is a valuable resource and a great read for all interested in military history.

This CD contains high quality scanned images of the original book, and has been bookmarked for easy navigation. Pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.
