On September 3 1939, Great Britain declared war on Germany, and as a result, Australia became involved on Britain's side. This book gives a very vivid account of this time. It is extremely well illustrated, and an impressive book. Dark green covers, with gilt lettering and a pictorial logo on the front cover.

From the Foreword by Nancy Wake

It is with great pleasure I accept the invitation to write a foreword for the ‘Australia Remembers 1945—1995’ book, Their Sacrifice. think it is time the young people in particular know more about the events that led to war in 1939.

I was in France when the Germans marched in and occupied the country.

The French people were stunned and said England could not survive. But she did, and it is thanks to the Battle of Britain pilots who repulsed a superior Luftwaffe that the free world saw a ray of sunshine. The rest is history.

I believe fervently in freedom. Not the destructive kind, but in the true sense of the word. I also believe in loyalty — loyalty to one’s country and flag.

I trust this Australia Remembers 1945—1995’ project will cause all Australians to stop and think about those who served their nation at a time of crisis — both at home and on the battlefield.
