Jeff Medwell (1923-2014) was the second child of May and Reginald Medwell. In April 1942, at age 19, Jeff joined the R.A.A.F. Following his discharge from the airforce he was employed in Broken Hill at the Barrier Miner newspaper, and then subsequently as a regional journalist for the ABC, later transferring to ABC in Adelaide becoming a talk back host.

During Jeff's active service he carried with him a 1937 portable Remington typewriter, which remained with him throughout his career as an "A" grade journalist and radio talk back host.

The original manuscript for this book was typed and dated on quarto paper soon after the events occurred, however a revised version was found amongst Jeff's many papers. This version is the basis for this book, although it omitted two of the original stories from the first draft.

Max Medwell, Jeff's brother has taken it upon himself to include along with the final article, those two events. One such story is headed "Some Clouds Have Hard Centres" and an abridged version is included in chapter seven. The other article is dated January 1st 1944 and related to the story of "Ron". Ron Okeden was the name Jeff used as a non de plume in his original manuscript. His family was not aware of this incident until he related it on air to ABC radio personality Peter Goers in July 2013.
