This CD contains two books on a single CD. 'The Scots in Germany: Being a Contribution toward the History of the Scot Abroad' originally published in 1902 with 335 pages, together with 'The Scots in Eastern and Western Prussia' originally published 1903, with 267 pages. By Thomas A. Fischer.
The first, a two-volume study is the most comprehensive available on the varied role of the Scots in Germany from medieval times through the 18th century. The Scots in Germany begins with chapters on the interaction of Scottish merchants with German markets, the conditions under which those merchants operated, the places where they settled, the ships and cargoes which they used, and their importance in the trade routes between Scotland and Germany prior to 1707. It continues with studies of the Scots in the armies of the Germanies, the interaction of Scots religiously with the Germanies, and final chapters on statesmen and scholars who either settled in or were influenced by Germany.
The Scots in East and West Prussia provides additional information on those Scots who were involved in trade to what is today eastern Germany in particular and to Danzig, Konigsberg, and Poland. Among the families most often cited are: Crawford, Crichton, Douglas, Drummond, Gunn, Johnson, Hamilton, Keith, Leslie, and Ramsay; but there are hundreds of additional references to less prominent families, particularly those who traded out of Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, Leith, and other towns in Scotland.
