The death of David, second Lord Ruthven, unmarried in 1701, left his title and estates to his three sisters and their heirs in turn. In the subsequent centuries, the legitimacy and indeed, the nature of this peerage was questioned, and an extended debate ensued. Because of this challenge, the Ruthvens genealogical descent was examined in detail and recounted in this history of the litigation over the title. It is, therefore, an invaluable work on the genealogy and history of the Ruthvens of Freeland from the late 17th into the 19th century.
