Written by "an eight years resident" (claimed by some sources to be E. Thorne) and published in 1876, the book was aimed at clearing up misapprehensions about the colony which existed in England at the time.
He touches on general features of the colony, climate and crops, natural history, the East and West Moreton districts, the Wide Bay district, the Interior and Northern districts as well as discussing the Polynesian question and the Aborigines. He concludes with a chapter on the present position and future prospects of the colony.
"That subject which at the present time is most agitating public opinion in Queensland, as well as calling the attention of people at home to that colony, is the trade which has of late grown to such importance with the New Hebrides and other islands of the South Seas in the importation of Kanakas under an agreement for three years' work. At the late general election in 1871 seats were won and lost on this question, and it has been considered of sufficient importance to form the matter of parliamentary debates and despatches from the Colonial Secretary."
