This is a historical and genealogical account of a family primarily from its "Scots-Irish" origins into North America, with a secondary interest in various Patten lines which have an English descent.
The primary focus is upon a line of Pattens who came into the American colonies around 1718 from Londonderry in the north of Ireland, and these are described as follows: Descendants of Letitia Patten, wife of James Cochran; the Pattens of Bedford, New Hampshire and the Kenebec Valley in Maine; Pattens of Chester, Auburn, Candia and Raymond, N.H.; Pattens of Merrimack, N.H. and Charleston, Maine; Pattens of Deering, N.H.; Pattens of Londonderry, Alexandria, Bristol, Hebron, Danbury, Grafton and Springfield, N.H. and Albany County, N.Y.; Pattens descended from three brothers: Actor and Robert Patten of Maine and William Patten of Boston; and Pattens of Marblehead, Mass., Londonderry and Canaan, N.H. and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Additional Pattens said to be of English descent are included selectively from New Hampshire and Maine.
