DEATH FROM THIRST or starvation, raids by bushrangers, or attacks by parties of marauding Aborigines were only some of the hazards faced by those who first overlanded stock through the vast, virtually unknown interior of Australia.

Some men made these treks as commercial ventures, to bring fresh meat to distant settlements; but there were others whose aim was to open up the hinterland and to establish their own holdings there. Many of these intrepid settlers struggled against enormous odds to build up what were to become ultimately some of the finest properties in the country.

Here are stories of the men who ferried flocks and herds across the continent from the eastern colonies to the south, from Queensland to the Kimberleys, or — perhaps the worst journey of all—from South Australia through the deserts of the inland to the Northern Territory. Included among these courageous overlanders are many whose names—Hawdon, Bonney, Eyre, Sturt, Giles, Durack — have a permanent place in Australia's history.
