The Military Establishment includes a general survey of the early military establishment, details of the military posts, an extensive biographical index and statistical data on each regiment.

The authors had originally started the research for their manuscript "HMS Sulphar" in the mid sixties, but became involved in a much longer project resulting in this book "The Military Establishment". Their motivation was "... a fitting mnemorial to the men of the Royal Navy and Army who contributed so much to the establishmemt of the Colony of Western Australia ..."

This text is now finally being published after being deposited in the Battye Library, and is still the most complete manuscript on the subject of the early colonial military history of Western Australia to date.
