This work began as an attempt to articulate and record the genealogy of various cadets of the family of Lyon of Wester Ogil and to accurately detail their descent from a common ancestor, William Lyon of Wester Ogil, Minister of Airlie.
In execution, the work began with the origin and early notices of the House of Lyon and with Sir John Lyon of Glamis and his wife Princess Johanna, daughter of King Robert II. It continues through the first five Lords Glamis and then to the Lyons of Cossins through the 16th and 17th centuries. Finally, in the early 18th century, the Reverend William Lyon of Wester Ogil, minister of Airlie (1675-1743), appears on the scene, and the primary focus of this work emerges. From the early 18th century, the genealogical and historical material on William Lyon and his descendants accumulates in considerable detail, and this continues through until the end of the 19th century.
This, then, is a history both of the illustrious House of Lyon and of this particular cadet branch.
