This work is somewhat unusual, for it is both a history and a travel guide through the old Lordship of the Isles by one of the most interesting and innovative historians of the 20th century.
Dr Isabel Grant long has ranked high among the historians who specialised in the Celtic/Viking world of western Scotland. Here, she takes the last great principality of Gaelic Alba, the kingdom of the Isles, travelling over it, investigating its terrain, its folklore and superstitions, its people and history. She took particular events and travelled to the sites associated with them, viewing them as they were and as they might once have been. She paid particular attention to the Kingdom of Dalriada; Iona; Colonsay and the Vikings; Morvern and Somerled; the Lordship of Lorn; Knapdale, Kintire, Islay, and the larger and smaller islands scattered throughout the Donald lands.
It is a fascinating history written for the layman and intending above all else to make clear the meaning of the history of this region.
