Dunblane is a town and parish in south Perthshire, and it therefore is more or less in the very middle of Scotland. This history traces the early centuries of the region when Celtic Christianity first entered Caledonia and when St. Blane gave the town its elevated place among centers of that religion. Indeed, the history of the cathedral of Dunblane from its early appearance to its decay following the reformation and its status thereafter constitutes much of the early part of this work. The Chisholm and Drummond families long played a major role in the region and town, as did the Campbells of Aberuchill and Kilbryde and the Homes of Argaty. The town of Dunblame languished during the 18th century and the Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1745-1746 brought near-disaster to the town. Subsequent chapters detail the life and times of Dunblane until near the end of the 19th century, with much material on the architecture, industry, education and economics of the town and area.
