The West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, is the last known operational cemetery still in use in Australia, with over 150 000 burials and 50 000 memorials.
The site was one of six reserves in the Parklands set aside by the Surveyor -General, Colonel William Light, when he surveyed the City of Adelaide in 1837. His original site was 32 acres, but it has changed its dimensions and grown over the intervening years to its present size of approximately 77 acres (26.71 hectares).
Due to its status for many years as the principal cemetery in the State, it has an important place in South Australia’s history as the burial place for many of the original pioneers, politicians, leaders of the community as well as ordinary residents. In 1989 the West Terrace Cemetery was listed on the State Heritage Register in recognition of its historical value as a record of the social and cultural history of South Australia,
Over time sections of the Public Cemetery have been granted to religious denominations for their exclusive use as well as for special purposes. Thereafter some of these sections were enlarged as more ground was required, or reduced in size if the original area was too generous and an adjacent section needed to be enlarged.
The West Terrace Cemetery represents a source of art, architecture, family and State history, industrial and monumental art, poetry, humour, and tragedy. This history has been prepared to provide a historical overview for the individual interested in the background of this final resting place for so many of the State’s residents.
