Written by C.L. Johnstone, this second edition which was published in 1889 is the history not only of a region in Scotland but also of the great families -- many of them Anglo-Norman -- who settled in the border lands between England and Scotland and who played a major role in the disturbances which kept this county and others in constant turmoil.
It begins with a chapter on the Norman settlers, including the Bruce, Carlile, Douglas, and Corry families, and then proceeds to study the turbulent years before the accession of the Stewarts, including the rivalry of the Baliols, the Bruces, the Stewarts, and others. Such families as Kirkpatrick, Johnstone, Kerr, and Crichton all fought for position within a rapidly changing world.
The history continues through the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, detailing the evolving affairs of the Graham, Gordon, Jardine, Comyn, Fleming, Murray, Irving, Charteris, Fergusson, Grierson, Herries, Boswell, and Bell families. It concludes with the reigns of James VI and his sons and the beginning of the expulsion of "reiver" families to Ireland.
