The Ruthven family was a wealthy and powerful force in Scotland during the reign of King James VI. It was alleged that they attempted to assassinate James while he visited them, but the case against them rests entirely upon evidence and testimony supplied by the King and his officials after the execution of the two Ruthven brothers. This study seeks to determine what was behind this sensational cause célèbre. It therefore provides much information upon the Ruthven family, its place in Scotland at the end of the 16th century, and the suspicions which James seemingly harbored about their intentions.
