The Gordon family was one of the most powerful families in all of Scotland, and as Earls and Marquesses of Huntly they played a significant role in the life of the nation over many centuries.

This is a history of that family, beginning with Lady Catherine Gordon, the White Rose of Scotland, and continuing with George, fourth Earl of Huntly and the first Cock o’ the North. The Reformation brought the Catholic Gordons into conflict with the Protestant forces in Scotland, and the civil wars of the 16th and 17th centuries added political to religious differences which would threaten the Gordons and their power base. There is material here on the last King of Poland and his descent from the Gordons and on the Jacobite activities of the Gordons from 1688 through the defeat of Prince Charles Edward at Culloden in 1746.

The appendices present much primary information about the household of the Gordons and various documents relating to their Jacobite interests. Other families most often encountered here are: Douglas, Drummond, Forbes, Grant, Hamilton, Keith, Lauderdale, Lockhart, Lyon, Sinclair, Stewart and Urquhart.

This CD consists of scans of the whole of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
