This is an extensive history of the Border families which occupied the lands between the English and Scottish borders, particularly in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when England and Scotland were independent kingdoms and when warfare between the two created an area often free from the law of either kingdom.
While the Dicksons are the major focus of this work, there are numerous other families which are dealt with in detail, including such major families as: Armstrong, Batie, Brown, Carlisle, Carruthers, Charteris, Cockburn, Cranstoun, Douglas, Eliot, Fraser, Gordon, Graham, Haliburton, Home or Hume, Irving, Jardine, Johnstone, Ker, Maxwell, Murray, Pringle, Ridpath, Rutherford, Scott, Turnbull, and Vaitch. These families engaged in what the crowns of England and Scotland often regarded as lawless behavior, and both the English and Scottish monarchs employed Border wardens with extensive troops.
