This first of all is a chronological arranging of various charters, wills, and other documents originally in the possession of the Dundas family. Papers exclusively relating to Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville, were excluded in reserve for a separate study of that politician. The introduction includes material on the early history of Dundas, the founding of the Dundas line at Arniston, the numerous branches of the family in Scotland, as well as Dundas lines in North America and Shetland. Subsequent chapters relate to events in Berwickshire, Covenanting, and the career of the Arniston line down through the 18th century when they in fact rule Scotland.
