The revised edition of this book written by Samuel McSkim in 1906, contains the history of Ulster during the turbulent times of the French Revolution. This was when Ireland was aroused to resist the British by the rhetoric and actions of those who toppled the French government, was first published in 1849 and re-issued in 1853 without change.

This new edition of 1906 corrected the errors of the first edition and provided notes and annotations, as well as an index. The author, Samuel McSkimin, was writing just a few years after the events which he here chronicled. He provided a detailed account of the activities in Ulster during a period in which that province became intensely political and militant after nearly a century of relative quiet.

The French Revolution had aroused the desire for political and social as well as economic independence from Britain, and of course the presence of large numbers of Presbyterian and other non-Anglican Protestants complicated the situation. They resented both the Catholic minority in Ulster and the Anglican minority which held political and economic power over both groups. The possible alliance of the two caused considerable alarm, and the government moved resolutely to prevent demonstrations and other militant actions. It was a period of radical change and Ulster was afire with the hope for a better world.
