A greatly underused source for, the Police gazettes provided information and instructions to members of the police force, and as such you can find details here that you simply will not find anywhere else. The Tasmanian Police Gazettes which were called the "Reports of Crime" early on, include the following information that will usually list names and sometimes personal details, descriptions with photograph, addresses and/or occupations may be an added bonus for the researcher:
- apprehensions
- convict returns
- disciplining of police
- escapees and absconders from custody
- housebreakers and burglars
- licensed carriers, hawkers, oyster fishers, and tanners
- deserting wives, families, etc
- deserting from military service
- deserting from merchant vessels
- inquests
- missing friends
- murderers and their victims
- police resignations
- prisoners discharged from gaols and released on tickets of leave
- property and stock recovered
- rewardsnames of persons offering a reward
- victims of arson
- victims of horse and cattle stealing or straying
- victims of lost or stolen property
- victims of sheep stealing or straying

ARSON!
£20 REWARD.
About 2 a.m. on the 9th instant a dwelling-house and store situate at Thomas's Plains, the property of Messrs. Brown and Inglis, was maliciously set on fire by some person orpersons at present unknown and destroyed; the house was unoccupied at the time and the only property in contained was some toys and wooden matches value about £3 10s. Messrs. Brown and Inglis offer the above reward for suchinformation as will lead to the conviction of the person or persons who committed the above offence.
