Police gazettes provided information and instructions to members of the police force. You can expect the Tasmanian Police Gazettes (in the earliest years called the 'Reports of Crime') to include the following information that will usually list names and sometimes personal details, descriptions with photograph, addresses and/or occupations may be an added bonus for the researcher:

• apprehensions
• disciplining of police
• escapees and absconders from custody
• housebreakers and burglars
• licensed carriers, hawkers, oyster fishers, and tanners
• deserting wives, families, etc
• deserting from military service
• deserting from merchant vessels
• inquests
• missing friends
• murderers and their victims
• police resignations
• prisoners discharged from gaols and released on tickets of leave
• property and stock recovered
• rewards - names of persons offering a reward
• victims of arson
• victims of horse and cattle stealing or straying
• victims of lost or stolen property
• victims of sheep stealing or straying

SAMPLE ENTRIES (from the 3 January 1913 issue):

HOUSEBREAKING.
PENGUIN.-HENRY EDGAR THOMAS reports that his store at Penguin was feloniously entered between 11.45 p.m. on the 24th and 9 a.m. on the 27th ultimo, and the following stolen therefrom:-6 pairs of ladies' shoes, sizes 2 and 3; 5 pairs of children's shoes, sizes 3 to 6; and a pair of child's white boots, size 5; value £2 10s.; identifiable. Entrance effected by breaking a pane of glass in a window at the back of the store and unfastening the catch.

INQUESTS ON BODIES.
DERBY:-JOSIAH RHUEBIN HOCKING, age 21 years. An inquest was held on the body of the above-named person on the 23rd ultimo, before F. E. Bomford, vEsq., Coroner. Verdict: "Accidentally drowned."

PRISONERS TO BE DISCHARGED.
HORNE, JOSEPH ARTHUR, on the 4th instant; vide "Persons Convicted," this issue; mole on left side of mouth, scar on left temple, thin scar on inside bend of right forearm, third finger of left hand injured.
