During 1917 the South Australian Police Gazette was issued weekly. They were used as a means to convey information to all South Australian Police Forces of information received relating to any crime, or missing items or person, changes in the force, as well as notifying of methods and procedures that need to be followed in certain circumstances.

A vast resource of personal information and events - if you find details of a person in a Police Gazette can lead to very interesting stories, or answer some questions about family stories that have been handed down.

This truly is an historian's goldmine of information which cannot be found elsewhere. Apart from any changes within the police force which are all listed, information is also given on housebreak-ins, robberies, arson, murders, lost horses and cattle, deserters, missing persons, warrants issued, arrests, escaped prisoners, and reports on those released. Notices from interstate police gazettes are sometimes included.

Special Inquiry
A motor cycle and side car (described hereunder), value £100, the property of Harold Sydney Redman, was stolen from York Lane, near Grand Central Hotel, Adelaide, on September 30th, 1916, and has not since been traced, The owner is not a wealthy man, and the loss to him is considerable. It is thought that some trace might be obtained in country districts. Special inquiries are therefore requested. Description - A motor cycle and side car, twin cylinder, Kink Dick engine, Bullock frame, painted pale blue, three-speed gear, aluminium footboards, ebonite grips, engine No. A5149, registered No. 5500. mudguards, acetylene gas lamp, and mechanical horn, side car has wicker body, leather cover, and spring seat. Escaped Prisoner of War
On the 24th ultimo Anton Ohlms and H.J. Schonobel (prisoners of war) escaped from the German Concentration Camp, Liverpool, New South Wales. Ohlma is described as a German, 19 years of age, 5ft. 10 3/4in. high, about 158lbs. weight, blue eyes, fair hair, a barman. Schonobel is a German, 20 years of age, 6ft. high, about 156lbs. weight, brown hair, grey eyes, bullet mark inside fleshy part of left thigh, a labourer. If located in South Australia to be arrested and handed over to the military authorities, Keswick. - (C.2368)
