If you had family living in South Australia in the 1884, have you thought of looking at the Police Gazettes for information? These are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else.

Issued approximately weekly, this is a compilation of all 53 issues that were released 1884. The information contained in each issue includes court lists, lists of warrants issued, appointments and changes in the Police Service, lists of Justices of the Peace, lists of arrests and discharges (which include descriptions), escaped prisoners, and missing persons. Notices from Police Gazettes from other states are also often included.

Housebreaking, &c.
On the 28th ultimo the dwelling of William Fax, at Morphett-street, Adelaide, was feloniously entered by the kitchen window, and the following property stolen: - £14 in silver notes, £15 in silver, 5s. in coppers; a pair of star-shaped silver earrings and brooch; and open-face silver Geneva watch, No. 70050, maker Stephenson; an oval gold brooch set with hair; a gold brooch set with two garments (one missing); a silver brooch; a locket, engraved "A.F." and chain; a gold ring set with two emeralds and three pearls, and a pair of plain round gold earrings. Three men, described as follows, were seen by neighbours, two on the premises in question in the backyard, and another, as if on watch, in the street facing the house. Description: - First man, about 5ft. 9in. high, supposed dark beard, dressed in hard black felt hat, silk coat, and dark trousers; second man, about 5th. 10in. high, slight build, dressed in black soft felt hat, grey coat, and grey trousers (no waistcoat); third man, of average height, and wearing a helmet, silk coat, and black trousers. Inquests
On the 15th instant, by E.H. Derrington, J.P., at Port Adelaide, on the body of Andrew Kiddie, who died from the effects of a wound received on the 4th instant. Verdict - "Manslaughter by the wife, Mary Kiddie", who was committed for trial on that charge.
