Government Gazettes are a vast resource for finding out historical information. In the 1860s you can expect the Government Gazettes to include the following information that usually list names, but also sometimes name of emigrant vessel, addresses and/or occupations:

• felony suspects, their apprehenders, victims of crime

• land owners whose properties are to be brought under the Real property Act

• naturalisation
• pastoral leasees
• petitioners to establish local government
• property owners subject to compulsory land acquisition by government
• property owners seeking to acquire an unutilised surveyed public road

The 1866 edition is a particularly useful issue for family historians as it lists in the 25 Jan 1866 issue from page 75, all persons dying on emigrant vessels from 1849 to June 1865.

The 1866 years worth of issues totals over 1300 pages, there are many thousands of people mentioned in each year of the Government Gazette,and this one is no different. If you had family living in South Australian during 1866, there is a reasonable chance that they will be mentioned in the Government Gazettes.

Gazettes are published by governments and their agencies as a means of communication to officials and the general public. As such they are useful, not only to monitor the actions of the government, but also as far as family historians are concerned, they are valuable primary source documents.
