South Australia has had Scottish settlers from the earliest time. Patterns of emigration brought people through the Highland Clearances; single people and families responding to advertisements of emigration agents announcing subsidized passages; the children of merchants and professionals who had a lessened opportunity to participate in their family's new found prosperity; and, others responding to the press, letters home and the literature of the time, describing the colony of South Australia in glowing terms.

The Scots in South Australia were obvious in every walk of life - they were engineers, pastoralists, social reformers and in the destitute asylum. They were noted for their dominance in certain areas of the colony - almost every town in the South East was started by Scots. They were particularly prominent throughout the Adelaide Hills.

The year 2000 was a memorable one for the history of Scottish settlement in South Australia, and to commemorate this event the Scottish Associations of South Australia Inc. chose to compile a comprehensive record of the colourful culture and expertise which helped build the wonderful state of South Australia.

This book is full of biographical information of Scots who came to South Australia and left their mark on the State in some way, together with details of Scottish related Groups, Clubs, Bands and Societies in the State. Some of the biographies are quite extensive, others just a few lines. Yet all did something remarkable to aid in becoming what it is today, and are therefore remembered.
