From the Foreword

Having lived in the Saddleworth area almost all my life I have noticed many changes. Some changes have been for the good but others I consider to be detrimental to the area. The leisurely life of the horse and buggy days has given way to the hustle and bustle of today. Many businesses have disappeared causing the population to travel further to receive these services. Small mixed farms have given way to bigger properties and a decrease in the rural population.

Although life in the area has changed the strong community spirit that existed in the early days still continues. We owe our early settlers much for this spirit and the foundation of a lifestyle we can be justly proud of. Saddleworth is the centre of an area with towns radiating out in a circle around it. Each town is only a short distance from Saddleworth and each other. In the early days this meant less travelling to business and services but today it is detrimental to the area as services need to be duplicated in each town. Also each town has become very parochial to its own area.

As Australia is a relatively young nation it is essential we record the history of the area as we know it for future generations to look back upon. I congratulate Mrs Nell Bellman and her helpers on the immense amount of research and time they have put into producing this book and preserving the history of the Saddleworth area for the use of generations to come.
