The late 19th century saw a renewal of interest in Scotland and in Clan MacLean, both in Scotland and in North America. J. P. MacLean, a recognized and eminent historian, records the evolving enthusiasm felt in both countries for a renewal and invigorated Clan MacLean. He noted the publications which appeared in the late 19th century, and here recounts the history of the clan and the fate of Dowart, and Duart Castle on the Isle of Mull. This fortification, lost to the family, long remained the focus of family pride, and there was a determination to restore that castle and to host a gathering there. This in turn activated and energized the larger society, and it was the gathering of the clan at Duart in August of 1912 which is here recorded as a renaissance of the overall society.
