Police gazettes provided information and instructions to members of the police force. You can expect the police gazettes to include the following
information that will usually list names and sometimes personal details, descriptions with photograph, addresses and/or occupations may be an added bonus for the researcher:
 - apprehensions
 - complainants
 - convictions without custodial sentence
 - escapees and absconders from custody
 - lost or stolen property and stock—names of victims
 - deserting wives, families, etc
 - deserting from military service and merchant vessels
 - missing friends
 - persons suspected or wanted for a crime and warrants issued
 - police resignations, dismissals and discharges
 - police killed in action or dying in the service
 - police promotion examination results and appointments
 - prisoners tried at supreme and circuit courts
 - prisoners discharged from gaols and prisoners released under licence
 - prohibited immigrants
 - superannuants

Gazettes are published by governments and their agencies as a means of communication to officials and the general public. As such they are useful, not only to monitor the actions of the government, but also as far as family historians are concerned, they are valuable primary source documents.

SAMPLE ENTRY (from the 7 January 1933 issue):

Wife and Child Deserter Wanted
Coolangatta.-PATRICK MALONEY, 31 years of age, 5 ft. 92 in. high, dark complexion, dark hair, clean shaven, grey eyes, wide nostrils, thick set, smart appearance, going bald; native of England; dressed in a grey tweed suit, black patent leather shoes, and grey tweed overcoat; a manufacturer of metal polish called "Swifto " which he disposes of to storekeepers and residents of country towns, is believed to have gone to New South Wales. Location desired by the Police, Coolangatta, with the object of serving upon him two minutes of order for maintenance made at Coolangatta, on 21/10/32, for the payment of £1 weekly for the support of his wife, Dorothy Victoria Maloney, and 110s. each weekly for the support of his three children.
