Police gazettes provided information and instructions to members of the police force. You can expect the police gazettes to include the following information that will usually list names and sometimes personal details, descriptions with photograph, addresses and/or occupations may be an added bonus for the researcher:
 - apprehensions
 - complainants
 - convictions without custodial sentence
 - escapees and absconders from custody
 - lost or stolen property and stock—names of victims
 - deserting wives, families, etc
 - deserting from military service and from merchant vessels
 - missing friends
 - persons suspected or wanted for a crime and warrants issued
 - police promotions, appointments, resignations, dismissals and discharges
 - police killed in action or dying in the service
 - prisoners tried at supreme and circuit courts
 - prisoners discharged from gaols
 - prisoners released under licence
 - prohibited immigrants

Gazettes are published by governments and their agencies as a means of communication to officials and the general public. As such they are useful, not only to monitor the actions of the government, but also as far as family historians are concerned, they are valuable primary source documents.

Commissioners' Office.-Warrants (three) have been issued for the arrest of LEONARD ROBERTSON. 1st: For disobeying an order of the court for the support of his wife and two children (amount due, £11 7s.). 2nd: Warrant of commitment for non-payment of £6 17s. 6d. 3rd: Cost upon an order, £2 3s. 6d. Description:-35 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, dark hair and complexion, large brown eyes (cast in left), false teeth; generally wears a dark-grey or brown sac suit. Is said to be employed at Brisbane as a wharf labourer. If located, it is requested that an endeavour be made to induce him to pay the amount of £20 8s. owing.-752. 26th February, 1923.

Cairns.-The summons for service on PATRICK JOSEPH KEARNEY, charged with child desertion, has been withdrawn, at the instance of the complainant, Elizabeth Bridget Kearney.-701. 23rd February, 1923.
