Police Gazettes are not only unique in their content, but they are a greatly undervalued, and underused source for researchers of local, family and social history. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes therefore contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else.

Although information did change a little over time, in general you can expect to find the following included in each issue:
 - apprehensions
 - complainants
 - convictions without custodial sentence
 - escapees and absconders from custody
 - lost or stolen property and stock—names of victims
 - deserting wives, families, etc
 - deserting from military service
 - deserting from merchant vessels
 - missing friends
 - persons suspected or wanted for a crime and warrants issued
 - police resignations, dismissals and discharges
 - police killed in action or dying in the service
 - police promotion examination results and appointments
 - prisoners tried at supreme and circuit courts
 - prisoners discharged from gaols
 - prisoners released under licence
 - prohibited immigrants
 - superannuants

Often entries include names and aliases, sometimes addresses, and personal physical details. Sometimes other family members are mentioned, and occasionally a photograph.

SAMPLE ENTRY (from the 17 March 1917 issue):

Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or Dwelling-house
Winton.-Stolen from a store at Wonton, during the past month, the property of the Vacuum Oil Company, Townsville, about sixteen cases of motor spirit and five cases of benzine: value £13 15s. 6d. Identifiable.-995. 6th March, 1917.

Ballara.-Stolen from a store at Rosebud, between the 18th and 24th ultimo, the property of H. Shaw, Ballara, three 25-lb bags of flour; three parts of a bag of sugar; one bag of rice; twelve grey cotton singlets; two shaving brushes, with wooden handles; twelve 1-lb tins of luncheon beef; six tins of ox cheeks; ten writing pads; thirty packets of cigarettes; one box of medium Havelock tobacco; four tins of dark Havelock tobacco; six tins of sheep's tongues; six pairs of dark-coloured trousers; eight flannel shirts; four sticks of Colgate's shaving soap; three dozen tins of Cressbrook milk; four white soft shirts; four tins of herrings and tomato sauce; six pipes; six 1-lb. packets of cornflour; three tins of rolled oats; five 1-lb. tins cocoa; six 1-lb. tins of Goldenia tea; quarter cwt. potatoes; quarter cwt. onions; four tins of pork sausages; four bottles of lemon squash; and eighteen tins of sardines: Value £25. Identification doubtful.-1032. 9th March, 1917.

Gazettes are published by governments and their agencies as a means of communication to officials and the general public. As such they are useful, not only to monitor the actions of the government, but also as far as family historians are concerned, they are valuable primary source documents.
