If you had family living in Queensland in the 1870s, have you thought of looking at the Police Gazettes for information? These are a historian's goldmine of information. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else. Far from just listing those who were in the Police Force, or those that were on the 'wrong side' of the law - you will also find entries of missing persons, or they might be a witness to crime, or they may have had something stolen from them, or they may even have found an item, and reported it to the Police.

Produced once a month, you still get information on the housebreak-ins, robberies, arson, murders, lost horses and cattle, deserters, escaped prisoners and reports on those released ... as well as some information from interstate police gazettes ... and so much more.

This is a compilation of all issues covering the whole of 1871 and 1872. Each issue is usually eight to ten in length, and is full of fascinating information.

Incendiarism
During the night of the 28th ultimo, a house containing three rooms (with detached kitchen), in which was stored a large quantity of cotton, furniture, and farm implements, at Goodna, the property of William Holme, was maliciously burned by some persons or persons unknown. 7th August, 1872.

Highway Robbery and Stealing From the Person
Stolen from the person of Ah Luck (Chinaman), in Albert street, Brisbane, on the night of the 3rd instant, 1 £5 note, 4 half-sovereigns, 1 £1 note, 2 half-crowns, a six-penny and three-penny piece, and a miner's right issued to Ah Luck, at Ravenwood. Suspicion (no warrant) rests on Mary Lee alias Lenehan, a prostitute, who was in the complainant's company. She was arrested by the Brisbane Detective Police and searched, but none of the property was found in her possession. 5th August, 1872.
