From 1885 'Pugh's Almanac and Queensland Directory' included a "Men of the Time" section each year. This CD gathers 16 years of these [1885 to 1900] into one handy collection. These publications were popular in the late Victorian, Edwardian period and are mainly comprised of biographies of notable citizenry and as such can prove very useful to historians looking for contemporary records prepared at the grassroots level about people. The downside is of course that the vast majority of people are not listed but if your ancestor held even a minor civic or government post such as a councillor or town clerk, these publications are worth following up. Apart from their name you can expect to find details of their origins and their achievements that have given rise to their inclusion in the publication. The entries range from a few lines to a page or more. This particular set of 16 volumes only lists the pages containing the biographies.

Biographical dictionaries are privately published and occur across the globe representing regions and large towns. They may include material of a nature often found in almanacs. As such they are useful and may provide that essential piece of background information about an individual that opens up new lines of research.

High quality scanned images of the whole of the original book, bookmarked for easy navigation. Pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.
