Fremantle Prison is the largest and most intact convict built prison in Australia and is Western Australia's only World Heritage Listed Building. It was continuously used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. The prison was decommissioned as a maximum-security gaol in 1991.

This book contains 330 pages of mugshots of prisoners who were released from Fremantle Gaol from 1899 through to the end of 1919. Over 3850 of them, and now fully indexed.

'Prisoners of the Past' creates a unique picture of those from the early 1900s who had transgressed. Interestingly, non-Europeans, apart from the obligatory Aboriginals, form a far larger proportion of the prisoners than their kind would represent as a percentage of the whole population.

Arranged chronologically by date, the index makes it easy to find who you are looking for. As you would expect men are the primary offenders here, but a few women also feature in the mugshots too.
