This is an account of this name as it appears in Scotland, doubtless from among the numerous French settlers who came into Scotland throughout its long history and association with the kingdom of France.
The constant need for feudal warriors to combat the English attracted many Frenchmen, particularly younger sons, who came to Scotland to make their fortune. The Abbey of Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte long was held to be of special importance to those of this name in Scotland. This history proceeds through the numerous charters and other records, many of them ecclesiastical, which include this family name. It then proceeds through references in the reign of William the Lion and down through the late medieval period.
The second half of the book is devoted to the Lairds of Thorndykes, who often were closely allied to the Earls of March and the Dunbar family, and who were closely involved as feudal warriors on the Borders and with Border warfare. The study of the Frenches of Thorndykes continues into the 17th century.
This CD consists of scans of the whole of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
