Directories are an invaluable resource for local, family and social historians as well as for researchers in other fields of Australian history. While they do not give you birth, death and marriage details - core records for genealogists and family historians - they can certainly provide you with information on the region where your ancestors lived, as well as information on their occupation and much more.
A huge volume of almost 1,600 pages, the 1936 Wise's New South Wales Post Office Directory is divided into several main sections:
- Sydney Streets Directory, with a street index, and street by street listings of all houses and the householder at each address
- Suburban Directory, lists people by occupation and (for larger suburbs) gives summary statistics and names of key office bearers
- A Country Directory section that lists people alphabetically for each town together with their occupation
- Sydney Trades and Professions, lists people by their trade
- New South Wales Trades and Professions, complements the Sydney lists to give coverage of all New South Wales
Separate directories are given for the following areas, making the work comprehensive and complete:
- Medical
- Educational
- Ecclesiastical
- Local Government
- Official (Government)
- Pastoral and Agricultural
It also includes a Pastoral Locality Index a complete list of Postal Towns and Localities plus a comprehensive listing of all sheep and cattle stations in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory giving the name of the owner as well as the postal address, the number of acres of the station and the numbers of sheep and cattle.
The directory includes many pages of advertisements - all useful information, often including names of people and places. The whole directory, including most text in the advertisements, is searchable, useful not only for finding names, but also places, occupations and other information for family and local historians.
