Police gazettes provided information and instructions to members of the police force. Gazettes are published by governments and their agencies as a means of communication to officials and the general public. As such they are useful, not only to monitor the actions of the government, but also as far as family, local and social historians are concerned, they are valuable primary source documents.

SAMPLE ENTRIES:

Murder - £250 Reward
Whereas about 7.15 a.m. on the 5th April last, the dead body of a Greek named George Pappageorgi was found int he kitchen at the Allies Cafe, No. 635 George-street and a rope tied tightly around his neck: And whereas at an adjourned inquest held on the 6th ultimo, before the City Coroner, the following verdict was returned:- "I find that the said George Pappageorgi, at No. 635 George-street, Sydney, in the District, in the State of New South Wales, on the 5th day of April, 1916, died from injuries inflicted upon him by some person or persons to me unknown, at the same place, on the same day: And I further find that, in the manner aforesaid, the said person or persons to me unknown did feloniously and maliciously murder the said George Pappageorgi." Notice is hereby given that a reward of Two Hundred and Fifty Pounds (£250) will be paid by Government for such information as shall lead to the apprehension and conviction of the guilty person or persons. In addition to the above reward, His Excellency the Governor will be advised to extend a free pardon to any accomplice, not being the person who actually inflicted the said injuries and thereby caused death, who sally first give such required information. This reward to remain in force for three months only.

Prisoner Released on License
Tamworth.-A commitment warrant to serve the unexpired portion of the sentence of three years' hard labour imposed upon him at the Gunnedah Sessions on the 17th November, 1913, has been issued by the Tamworth Bench against Roland (or Rowland) Thompson, alias John Roberts, alias G.H. or John Smith, for committing a breach of the conditions of his release on license. Offender is 39 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, black hair, blue eyes, nose crooked, right forefinger deformed, mole on right cheek, mole on back neck, scar on left knee; a labourer. Identical with discharged prisoner same name (vide Police Gazette, 1916, page 276, and Photo book No. 72, page 246). Not to be arrested after the 16th November, 1916. See also "Offences, &c." this issue).

Manslaughter
Paddington.-Mabel Swiney (31), charged with causing the death of Arabella Robinson, at Paddington, on the 1st February, 1917, has been arrested by Sergeant 2nd Class Hamilton and Constable Hollis, Sydney Police. Discharged. Offender subsequently brought before the Central Criminal Court, Sydney, on ex-officio indictment, charged with causing the abortion of deceased, and sentenced to six months' light labour.

Bigamy
Wagga Wagga.- Edith Emily Barclay (27), charged that she did, on the 9th October, 1911, at Lewisham, England, marry one Henry Harry Barclay, and while so married, did, on the 22nd February 1917, at Wagga Wagga, marry James Owen Miles, the said Henry Harry Barclay being then alive, has been arrested by Inspector 3rd Class Duprez, and Sergeant 2nd Class Gallaher, Wagga Wagga Police. Committed for trial at Albury Circuit Court.

Murder
Gunnedah.-Charles Gray Spink, charged with the wilful murder of George Willie Stanley, at Black Jack, near Gunnedah, on the 4th October, 1919, has been arrested by Sergeant 1st Class Bond and Constable Nolan, Gunnedah Police. Committed for trial by the District Coroner at such Court as the Attorney-General may direct.

Inverell.-Ivy Dewberry (21), charged with the wilful murder of her newly-born illegitimate male child, at Inverell, on the 30th August, 1919, has been arrested by Sergeants 2nd Class Moroney, 3rd Class Crozier, and Constable Gaulter, Inverell Police. Committed for trial by the District Coroner at Armidale Circuit Court.

Deserters from His Majesty's Service
From H.M.A.S. "Cerberus" at Williamston, on the 12th October, 1920: Albert Hancock Robinson, able seaman, born in England, 23 years of age, 5 feet 3 inches high, black hair, brown eyes, dark complexion.

from H.M.A.S. "Sydney" at Sydney, on the 4th October, 1920: George Reginald Lewis Burgess, stoker second class, born in New South Wales, 18 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, medium complexion, dark hair, hazel eyes. A reward not exceeding £6 and expenses will be paid for the apprehension of the abovenamed deserter.

from H.M.A.S. "Brisbane", at Sydney, on the 16th October, 1920: Patrick John Egan, telegraphist, born in New South Wales, 20 years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, hazel eyes, scar on left arm. Jack Rowland Windsor, stoker, born in New South Wales, 21 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, sandy hair, grey eyes, scar above second joint of third left finger. Harry Raymond Mantova, stoker, born in New South Wales, 18 years of age, 5 feet 10 1/4 inches high, fresh complexion, dark hair, brown eyes, scar on leg. A reward not exceeding £6 and expenses will be paid for the apprehension of each of the abovenamed deserters.
