Government Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. They were published by the government as a means of communication to officials and the general public and therefore contain information that is of great use in establishing an image of the colony of New South Wales and its people in the past.

Police Office, Bathurst
16th December, 1841
The undermentioned Property, which belonged to John Webb, per Isabella, who held a Ticket of Leave for the District of Bathurst and who died in the General Hospital there on the 30th of October last, will be sold by Public Auction, at the Police Office, on Monday, the 17th day of January next:- Eight shirts, One clasp knife, Two pairs scissors, One comb, One housewife, One pocket comb, Curry-comb and horse brush, Shoe binding, Forceps and awl, One hat, Seven silk handkerchiefs, Two cotton ditto, Three razors, One bone and soap-box, Four pairs socks, Fourteen pairs stockings, One pair shoes, Three pairs trousers, Three waistcoats, Two coats, Three jackets, One bed-tick, One pine chest, Two pairs drawers, One bed, One blanket. All persons having claims against the deceased are required to send the same to the Police magistrate for investigation, within ten days after the date of Sale.

Name, Thomas Newcombe, No. 1054, Private; Age, 25 years and 7 months; height, 5 feet 9 inches; Complexion, Fresh; Hair, Dark Brown; Eyes, Hazel; Date of Desertion, 21st December 1841; From whence Deserted, Sydney, New South Wales; Date of Enlistment, 11th November 1834; Place of Enlistment, Gloucester; Parish where Born, Cirencester; County, Gloucester; former Trade or Occupation, Labourer; Dress at the time of Desertion, Red Shell Jacket, (Regimental) White Duck Trousers, (Regimental); Remarks, took the whole of his Regimental necessaries with him.
