Published in 1843, this book by James Backhouse details his travels and observations in Australia between 1831 and 1838. During his time here, he kept a journal, recording notes on religious subjects, the productions of the places visited, the state of the Aborigines, the emigrants, the prisoner population and more.

His travels were extensive and included Hobart Town, Launceston, Macquarie Harbour, George Town, Circular Head, Hampshire Hills, Flinders Island, Kelvedon, Browns River, Port Arthur, Norfolk Island, Sydney, Wellington Valley, Bathurst, Maitland, Moreton Bay, Berrima, Camden, Parramatta, Pennant Hills, Port Phillip, King George Sound, Swan River settlement, and Port Adelaide.

The narrative gives great snapshots of what life was like at the time and includes many plates of the places, people, flora and fauna.

'WELLINGTON VALLEY was formerly a Penal Settlement for educated prisoners. The houses and barracks are of brick; most of them are whitewashed. The best is occupied by the two missionary families; another, temporarily, by two young settlers, and a third by four soldiers. The number of Blacks at present on the settlement, is very small : thirty were here lately, but most of them have gone away for a short time, it is conjectured, on account of the death of one of their countrymen.'
