Written in 1902, this book gives interesting insights into life in the Australian bush at the time. In the 18 chapters the author, Mrs Campbell Praed, touches on a many aspects of life in Australia, more particularly on the bush life in Queensland: the Young-Old Land, the Dispossessed, the Blacks' Camp, the Making of a State, Through the Scrub, In a Hammock, Neighbours on the River, Portraits, Unumgar, the Bushranger and the One-Eyed Girl, Among the Selections, Verandah Talk, Doctor Discourses, and On an Island. Places mentioned include Naraigin, Peel Island, Bribie Island, Dugandine Scrub, Coochin Plain, Mount Marroon, Mount Barney, Mount Lindsay, Marroon, Tamrookum and Unumgar Crossing.
"Marroon had not many neighbours, and what there were were chiefly men. Certainly, Tamrookum was only about twenty-five miles off by the riding track, but that led through a gorge and was not always traversable. The only driving road was the one leading to Brisbane through Dugandine Scrub. As for the tracks to the stations round and across the border, it was not safe to stray off them, for you might find your horse sliding down a precipice unawares."
There are many illustrations accompanying the text South Head and Sydney Harbour, Botany Bay, near the Fitzroy Falls, Coochin Plain, Marroon Head Station, Mount Lindsay and Unumgar Head Station to name a few.
