The full title of this work is "Memorials of Angus and the Mearns: Being an Account, Historical, Antiquarian, and Tradionary, of the Castles and Towns Visited by Edward I, and of the Barons, Clergy, and Others, Who Swore Fealty to England in 1291-6; Also, of the Abbey of Cupar and the Priory of Rostinoth". 

It deals with the shires of Forfar and Kincardine in the northeast of Scotland, between the Tay and Dee Rivers. It is a work, however, which concentrates its attention upon the history of the region, particularly in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, when King Edward I of England was seeking to subjugate Scotland and to make its kings his subordinates. It provides an extensive survey of the castles and towns visited or subjected by Edward I in 1296, including Forfar, Kinnaird, Montrose, Kincardine, Brechin, and Dundee. It then turns to the great families who swore fealty to Edward in 1291-2 and again in 1296. Among the many families presented here are: Dundee, Glaister, Haldane, Lindsay, Lundin, Ogilvie, Ochterloney, and Ramsay. It concludes with a survey of the great abbeys of Cupar, Arbroath, and the priory of Rostinoth. It also includes material on the Knights Templar of the era and on the clergy in general.
