The Post Office introduced a new Postal District System in 1936 designed to improve the postal services to the residents of Melbourne. For the scheme to be effective all letters had to bear the new postal district number. This booklet covers all the metropolitan area and was supplied free of charge to encourage its adoption.
All the metropolitan post offices are listed together with their postal district symbols as well as a list of the metropolitan streets and the relevant postal district symbol.
