Directories are one of the most effective ways of tracing members of a family, especially tradesmen. Many small businesses needed to ensure the public was aware of their activity and one of the better ways to do this in an age before media dominated was via a directory. • Alphabetical directory (state-wide): an alphabetical list of residents together with their address, and usually includes occupation.
• Trade and professional directory: like a current-day yellow pages, this has occupations arranged alphabetically, together with the the persons name, and address
• The Miscellaneous section is also useful to, as it contains mini-directories of banking and insurance companies, societies and institutions, government MPs, consuls, clergy, councillors and judicial officers and more.

Users should always refer to the display advertisements as they often provide names and addresses.
