The Sands and McDougall directories are not only one of the best known of the Australian directories, but also the most comprehensive. Directories are one of the most effective ways of tracing members of a family, especially tradesmen. Many small businesses needed to ensure the public was aware of their activity and one of the better ways to do this in an age before media dominated was via a directory.

Divided into three main sections: Street directory; Alphabetical directory; and a Trade and Professional directory.

    • Street directory lists householders street-by-street, and covers Melbourne, Alphington, Ascot Vale, Balmoral, Bollingbroke, Boroondara, Box Forest, Brighton, Brunswick, Cambridge, Camberwell, Carlton, Caulfield, Coburg, East Collingwood, East Melbourne, Emerald Hill, Easternwick, Essendon, Hartwell, Hawthorn, Heidelberg, Hotham, Irishtown, Ivanhoe, Jolimont, Kensington, Kew, Malvern, Moonee Ponds, Mulgrave, Newlands, Newmarket, Northcote, Oakleigh, Prahran, Preston, Richmond, Sandridge, St Kilda, South Melbourne, South Yarra, Toorak, West Melbourne, Williamstown, Windsor, Yarraberg, and Yarraville
    • Alphabetical directory is state-wide, and lists persons alphabetically by surname, together with their address, and usually their occupation
    • Trade and professional directory - arranged alphabetically by trade, this is like an earl 'yellow pages', and lists the person, together with their trade and address

Other useful mini-directories included, provide the names and positions of hundred of people, in the following occupations or positions:

    • Banking, insurance companies, friendly societies, gold mining companies, railways, shipping
    • Societies, lodges and institutions lists patrons, presidents, secretaries, treasurers
    • Government - the MPs, heads of departments, receivers of revenue, paymasters, commissioners of crown lands, harbour masters and pilots, inspectors of distilleries, immigration agents, military officers are listed
    • Consuls
    • Clergy
    • Courts - covers judicial officers, sheriffs, bailiffs, commissioners for taking affidavits, coroners
    • Municipalities - lists councillors, town clerks

Users should always refer to the display advertisements because not only do they give you a sense of the era, but they often provide names and addresses.
