The Hume family is one of the oldest and most illustrious in Scotland, and the family long has been associated with the national history of that country. This is a study of Humes of Polwarth, a parish in Berwickshire, midway between Duns and Greenlaw. Polwarth over the centuries has been owned by the Polwarth, Sinclair, Hume and Purves-Hume-Campbell families. This history begins with an extended account of the region and its involvement through its owners with the affairs of Scotland from the 12th century onward. But it is with the Humes of Polwarth in the 16th and subsequent centuries that this account is most concerned. Lady Grisell Baillie, the daughter of the eighth Lord Polwarth, the Ryehouse plot, and the subsequent fate of the Humes during the reignsof King James VI and his son King Charles I all brought the family into controversial political activities. The Revolution of 1688 restored the family to its estates and to favor with the new king, William III, and the Humes prospered then and in the reign of the Hanoverian kings whom they supported. Indeed the soaring fortunes of the family in the 18th century are very much at the core of this work.
