FROM THE INTRODUCTION
Queanbeyan’s first newspaper was the Golden Age, which made its debut on the 15th September 1860. It was a four-page, weekly edition and covered both local and interstate Australian news as well as the most important overseas news and gossip of the day. The editor was John Gale, who also ran the Golden Age as a letter-press and printing business, where he advertised the printing of cheque books, pamphlets, posters, reports, cards etc
When researching our own family histories we found that although there were many newspaper indexes of births death and marriages, they rarely included items such as business advertisements, public notices and other day-to-day issues, which are often just as important to include in your family’s story.
As a result of our own experience we have created a comprehensive index of all Australian, U.K & New Zealand related items appearing in the Queanbeyan newspaper, which includes such things as births, deaths and marriages, obituaries, funeral descriptions, inquests, trials and court appearances, news, advertisements, political issues, notices and much more. This index contains over 11,200 entries, which we hope will be of great benefit to local and family historians alike.
