This is the second of a series of four books published by the Australian War Memorial on the Royal Australian Navy during World War II. Written and prepared by serving personnel of the RAN in 1943, it presents "a continuation of the story begun in H.M.A.S., of the Royal Australian Navy".

It covers a period in which the battle turned from defensive to offensive; where blows had been struck, “and ships of the Royal Australian Navy participat[ed] in the striking. At Guadalcanal and Tulagi in the Solomons, at Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, at North Africa, Sicily and Italy in the Mediterranean, and at New Guinea, sea power has enabled the transportation by ship, and the landing in the face of opposition by land, by air and by sea, of great armies.”

A wide variety of topics are covered as indicated by some of the chapter titles – Merchantmen do their bit, The WRANS grows up, HMAS Matafele, The RAN at Papua, Cameos of the little ships, An incident in the life of a corvette, A ship is reborn (HMAS Riverina), Koopa the mystery ship, First Naval officer killed in New Guinea, Church on the Quarter-Deck, and Mine sweeping moments.
