During the mid-nineteenth century approximately 200 German immigrant families settled in the Clarence Valley of New South Wales. Most of them originated from the South Western States of Germany.

Some of these families did not stay in the Clarence River District for longer than a few years, but the majority of them settled permanently, and their descendants are still to be found in plentiful numbers living in and around the Clarence Valley today.

This book sets out to document the early history of this community of German Pioneers in Australia. It addresses such questions as who were they? Where did they come from? When did they arrive? Why did they come to the Clarence Valley? Who imported them and who employed them? Where did they live after they arrived in the Valley and what contribution did they make, individually and collectively to the life of nineteenth century Clarence River towns and villages.

The first part of this book deals with the general configurations of the Clarence River German families as a whole, their origins, their immigrations details, their occupations, and most importantly, the reasons for their settlement in the Clarence Valley. The second part is devoted to a brief genealogical profile of 195 of these German families. Note: the family profiles focus on the vital details of only the first generation of pioneer German families and their children. To take the genealogical profiles beyond this generation is outside the scope of this investigation.
